ATONEMENT
& The TABERNACLE

To the casual reader of the Bible, the account of the Tabernacle of Israel may seem a chronicle of no real import for Christians today. The sacrifice of bulls and goats upon a brazen altar may seem to be just another meaningless tradition. But, the Apostle Paul explains that this drama, which was played out among the Jews for over 500 years, was not only a schoolmaster designed to lead them to the Messiah, but also abounds with significance for the Christian—"a shadow of good things to come." Gal. 3:24; Heb. 10:1

One of the most significant features of the Tabernacle arrangement of Israel was the "day of Atonement." This day, which in the type was but a twenty-four hour day, was in antitype an illustration of the entire Gospel age. And, as in the type, with its close the sacrificing ceases, the glory and blessing begin, and the great High Priest of the world (Christ, together with his underpriests, the church) will stand forth crowned a King of Peace. (Hebrews 5:10) There he will stand before the world (unseen by natural sight), not only as King and Priest, but also as the great Prophet—"A Prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me [Moses];...and it shall come to pass that every soul which will not hear that Prophet shall be destroyed from among the people." When, during the Millennium, under the government and teaching of this great Prophet, Priest and King, mankind is brought to perfect knowledge and ability that they might render perfect obedience. Acts 3:22,23
